First let me start by describing my skin type. This is an important factor in how and which products are effective for me. However, saying that, if a product irritates it irritates. If it works it works. If you, like me, have tried everything else than there is no harm in trying something that is working for me. I am a Eurasian guy (Australian/Filipino) so my skin is normal to oily. It is quite sensitive and reacts to any irritants by drying out, and drying out rather quickly, or sometimes getting overly oily. Irritants can also clog my pores and cause breakouts. A couple of years back I once had a facial at a salon. On the first application of cleanser I noticed my skin start to itch due to ingredients reacting to my skin. I mistakenly ignored it and continued the facial anyway. The next day I woke up with 3 or 4 developing pimples under the skin that lasted a week. This is how quickly my skin reacts. Most of the time I was able to use the product for 2 to 3 weeks, then my skin got used to the product and either stopped being effective or stated to irritate. Hence, the reason I have tried so many products over the years. So, finding a product that does not irritate my skin and which works was a feat. My stretchmarks have proved to be a more stubborn condition. I have stretchmarks on both my butt cheeks caused by fast weight gain during puberty (around 13years old). Ideally, I would have started treatment at that time while they were still reddish in colour. Unfortunately, I was not that wise. I only started trying treatment about 3 years ago when 10years had already passed and my stretchmarks had turned silvery in colour. Having already turned silvery means they are more stubborn in response to treatment. So, the lesson here is to treat stretchmarks while they are still reddish in colour or better yet use preventative measures! If all that is not enough, dandruff is also a concern for me. In the past I was like a walking snow machine. I still deal with this problem though it is not as bad as it used to be. Without further ado, here are most of the products I have tried and words on my current regime. I welcome any comments, advice or testimonials... Acne/Pimples Clearasil and other benzoyl peroxide based products - The 5% benzoyl peroxide was way too strong no matter which product I tried. At one stage while using Clearasil my face turned bright red and took a week for my skin to calm down and for the redness to disappear. This was one of my worst reactions. Pro-active - The cleanser is not too bad, however for me it was too abrasive for everyday use. The small percentage of active ingredient (benzoyl peroxide), compared to other products, was the best thing about this product. Enough to do some good, but not enough to cause irritation. The toner and moisturiser is not very good at all. In fact they were very irritating from the first application so I did not use them after that. Clean & Clear (Johnson & Johnson) - this product is not too bad but was like liquid soap. The high foaming action just screams irritants. It was a little drying for my skin after a few applications though I do recommend trying it. Clinique and other high end cosmetic brands - I tried Clinique mens range, again this wasn't too bad but started to irritate my skin after a couple of weeks. I was not too keen on using soap on my face either. The scruffing lotion (toner) was full of alcohol and the moisturiser too moisturising. I tried other high end cleansers but they all seemed similar. Not worth the money. Natural cleansers (available from health food stores) - I tried a number of products with basic ingredients but none did anything for my acne. They were good at getting rid of surface dirt but again did nothing for my pimples. Dermastyle Acne Pen - this product uses blue and red light therapy to blast germs that cause pimple growth. This pen seem to work in helping the pimple come to the surface, thus shorting the time the pimple was there. It does not prevent pimples from occurring. It was very time consuming as I could only treat one pimple at a time and had to hold the pen for 10minutes on each! If you have 3 or 4 pimples that's 30 to 40 minutes of holding the pen to your face. It was a waste of time and money in my opinion. Cetaphil and other non-cosmogenic soaps (including sorbelene) - Again not so bad as a basic cleanser to remove surface dirt, but did nothing for my pimples. Murad - Irritated and dried my skin out. I tried this for the active ingredient - salicylic acid. I was reading excerpts of Paula Begoun's book Don't go to the Cosmetic Counter Without Me. Her opinion was salicylic acid was the best treatment for acne. However, Murad's formulation did not work for me. Tea tree oil and tea tree oil based products - too drying for my skin and also left me smelling like a medicine cabinet. B5 clearskin - I went though one treatment phase using B5 Clearskin powder. It tasted horrible but I stuck with it. I cannot concretely say whether it did any good or not. I noticed a severe drop in pimples after the treatment period, but not sure if it attributed to the B5. I have a feeling it did some good. I am glad I did do one treatment phase and would recommend you try it at least once. Vitamins - Apart from B5 I have also tried many different vitamins to try and treat my pimple from the inside out. Such as silica, large doses of vitamin A, Vitamin E, niacin, tissue salts and others. None of these seem to directly influence my pimples however I have now settled on taking vitamins that contribute to my overall health. Acid peels - I am not sure what type of acid peels I had. It was a number of years ago and I was not interested in the active ingredient at the time. I was just interested in the results. I had about 6 treatments (one a week). The beautician would apply the acid and then cover my face with glad wrap. My face would heat up straight away, like it was slightly burning. For the next couple of days my face would be really dry and the skin would flake off. This series of acid peels got rid of a lot of the marks on my face. I assume it was glycolic peel but it could have been a number of other peels. Current Acne/Pimple Regime Now I would not say I am free from pimples completely. I have gone from having bad acne all over my face to a relatively clear complexion with only the occasional pimple. I have resigned myself to the fact that my skin will be oily and prone to breakouts, but if I look after it, I can keep it relatively pimple free. Dermalogica has been my wonder product range. I have been using it for nearly two years without having to change. It does not irritate my skin and it works. It fits my criteria precisely. Before using Dermalogica I had only been able to use a product for 3 to 4 weeks at the most before it started to irritate and dry my skin out. So being able to use this product for nearly 2 years is fantastic. My essentials are - beauty brush, special cleansing gel, multi-active toner, prep scrub, active moist (moisturiser), solar defence booster (SPF 30), medicated clearing gel and skin refining mask. It is not a cheap brand but the products last for ages. I consider it value for money. If you want to trial them buy a Travel Kit for $50. The normal/oily travel kit has the basics of my essentials listed above. It will last for 1-2months. My routine - I wash my face every morning using special cleansing gel working it in with the beauty brush. I then apply toner and moisturiser. I do this again at night before bed but I do not use the facial brush. Using the brush both day and night stimulated my face too much. Once or twice a week do a mini facial. Cleanse with beauty brush, wash off, apply scrub, wash off, apply clay mask, wash off, then apply toner and moisturiser. Dermalogica have a benzoyl peroxide base spot treatment but I think benzoyl peroxide does too much damage to my skin. Instead I use the Medicated Clearing Gel as a spot treatment. It has the active ingredient salicylic acid, which I believe is more effective. I dab a small amount on pimples at any time during the day. Dermalogica have a number of products that are geared towards acne/pimple sufferers such as anti-bac skin wash and anti-bac cooling mask, but I find all the other products too irritating. I tried using the anti-bac skin wash but it was too irritating for daily use. I could use it once a week, and occasionally do, but would not use it everyday. There are other factors that I believe contribute to my clear face: Hair - I keep my hair short as possible. My hair grows pretty quickly so I have my hair cut every 4weeks. Every time my hair gets longish my skin takes a dive for the worse. My face gets more oily and feels more dirty. This results is my face breaking out. So my message is to keep your hair short and away from your face. Vitamins - To supplement my diet I take Vitamin C, Zinc and Fish Oil capsules. Vitamin C and Zinc are the main ones for the skin. Zinc aids in recovery and assists in reducing production of sebum. Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen. Fish oil replaces any bad oils clogging up your body. Overall the vitamins along with a healthy diet aid in a healthy body from the inside out. While there is no known link between what you eat and the presence of pimples, there is evidence that a healthy diet is linked to a healthy body and that includes you biggest organ - the skin. B5 Clearskin - I have a feeling that the one course of B5 Clearskin I did has contributed to my clear skin today. Give it a go. Picking pimples - Lets face it, we all pick our pimples or squeeze out whiteheads at some time. No matter how often we read not to do it, we still do. So with trial and error I have found the most suitable time and circumstance. If you are going to do it, do it at night before bed and do not wash your face afterwards. If you wash your face you wash away all the natural oils that help to soothe and heal the area you just inflamed (by squeezing). Do not squeeze a pimple that is below the surface, this will just spread the infection and make it worse. Only 'pop' pimples when you see the white tip of pus. Use a needle to puncture the skin to make it easier. After popping dab the ara with Dermalogica medicated clearing gel or other salicylic acid (2%) spot treatment. StretchMarks Rosehip oil - did not work. Bio oil - made my skin soft (just like a babys' bottom) but did nothing for my stretchmarks. Strivectin SD - mega expensive and still did nothing. Did not alter the appearance and did not even smoothen the skin. It is a major waste of money in my opinion. Tri-Lastin SR - this is the product that appeared on The Tyra Banks Show. While it did not change the appearance of the stretchmarks it did alter the feel of them. It seemed to smooth out the rough edges or ridges of the stretch marks. I was happy that it smoothed out the edges, but that was not my goal. I used one tube (6weeks worth) and moved onto the next product. Vitamin E Oil (pure) - Did not work. I was surprised that this did not work as Vitamin E is supposed to work wonders on scar tissue. Vitamin E Oil Cream - Did not work. I thought I would try this to see if the cream was more effective carrier for the vitimin e into the skin Palmer's Cocoa Butter - Did not work. Considering the hype over this product and how long it has been around, I hoped that the butter would work. All it did was create an oily mess and left me smelling like a pastry dessert. John Plunkett's Superfade Cream - Did not work. This is a fading cream. The active ingredients hydroquinone and salicylic acid apparently works well on sunspots and freckles. Current Stretchmark Regime At the moment I am using Emu oil (pure multi-purpose liquid). I have been using it once a day for the past two weeks. Of all the oil-based products I have tried, this has been the best so far. The best time to apply it is after a shower so the skin is warm and the pores are open to absorbing the oil. I like how things are progressing at the moment, though I will leave my final judgement for the 6 week mark. If I am not impressed at the 6 week mark, I have lined up Dr Moy's Straie Stretchmark Creme as the next product to trial. Sebaceous prominence Sebaceous prominence are small pimple like growths that appear in small clusters on the shaft and/or around the base of the penis [See What is PPP? for picture]. While I do have some signs of sebaceous prominence, it is not visible enough to be of worry to me or my sexual partner. In my research over regarding pearly penile papules I have come across an excellent forum devoted to finding a cure or treatment for sebaceous prominence. So anyone with this infliction check it out. It is run, funnily enough by another Dennis. http://sebaceous.proboards42.com/ Dandruff I am not going to name all the products I have tried for dandruff. If you see it on the shelf I have probably tried it over the years. At the moment I am using Head & Shoulder. This is the only product that makes a difference, but I have to cycle it with something else as it loses its effectiveness after a while. I assume because my skin gets used to it. Anyone with a sure fire solution, let me know. | Return Home | What is PPP? | Pearly Penile Papules Pictures | Home Remedies | Other Treatments? | Other Skin Ailments | JOIN | Contact Info | MEMBER HOME | |
